Key takeaways from the 4 Talks by Experts

Talk 1

In this talk, Sir talked about Modernism and its effect on the architecture of the world.

  • Modernism is a term coined to describe a certain period in the evolution of humankind.

  • Our generation is also in modernism as it is the result of action which humans did in past and which are doing now will be helpful for ur future.

  • Types of isms - Post-Modernism, Reconstructism, Post-Truth

  • Modernism changed the way human lives, events, human actions from 1000s of years.

  • Ever since then the rate of change was steadily accelerated over time.

  • Before modernism, the way of change has more or less remained unchanged and humans maintained balance with nature.

  • The machines were first created to become alternating to handcrafting whether it was to grow food or manufacture products necessary to perform daily activities and this became the principle of mass production that escalated profits through the economies of scale.

  • These machines led to the start of Industrialization. Later people started making new things that were never seen or imagined before.

  • Effects of Industrialization- Unemployment, Poverty and Degradation of the living condition within the Rural population, Pollution like Smog

  • In the race to make new (like Electricity, Railways, Guns, Science Fiction, Professions etc.), Europeans started trading with resource-rich and technologically advanced countries (like India and China) and that led to the establishment of the East India Company, the military to save the trade routes and Colonialism for money, later become the supplier of raw materials.

  • Industrialization created a divide between the traditional crafts and the new professions (the ones who built the industrial age) and the newness from the past traditional ways being named modernism.

  • People also started making a new type of architecture considering it to creating a new machine.

  • People made the architectures with complete honesty to reflect their functions, process of creation, style and appearance.

  • After the confidence in doing unachievable in life ade the people to make architectures wit superficial styling and now they were capable to manufacture anything anywhere in the world with no bounding of geographical and cultural context.

Talk 2

In this talk, Sir explained the Riti School and gave knowledge on sculptures.

  • Indian Art tradition was over-shadowed by theorizations (scholastic tradition oblivious of historicity) and due to lack of chronological awareness in historical documentation.

  • But India has a highly developed aesthetic sensibility that founded the empirical Riti School which was being neglected in studies compared to Rasa, Dhvani and Alankara.

  • The Riti was originated in Bharata's Natyashastra.

  • Parabolic stye evolution in art started with Geometric, Archaic, Early Classical, High Classical, Hellenistic and Rococo. It was not applicable in India.

  • India was experiencing different evolutionary pattern that are phases, not types and warrants historical perspective.

  • Satya Chitra - Reveals similarity with nature and the art has developed and tendered limbs, proportionate, with appropriate backgrounds.

  • Vainika Chitra - Well balanced and composed, neither dwarfish for elongated and the art is well proportionate in perfect axis.

  • Nagara Chitra - Well-nourished physique but not a voluminous restrained depiction and the art is made with moderate decoration and ornamentation.

  • Riti Vichara - Sculpture, Classical Nagara Chitra and Baroque

  • Style and Riti are apparently similar but different concepts like Dhyeyabhuta Riti, Period Style, Regional Style.

  • Zeitgeist period was evolving in a different pattern.

Talk 3

In this talk, Ma'am talked about the evolution of clothing.

  • Clothes changes with the region and the culture person belong to.

  • The culture shows the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, social habits, patterns of behaviour, history, art and concept of beauty.

  • The percept, material, style and evolution in clothing is the same way everything changes with time and culture.

  • Two aspects of the study on Clothes -The Tangible and Intangible Domain

  • The material domain deals with physical objects that can be felt and are represented by a cultural object (noun).

  • The non-material domain includes various norms, believes and practices a community follows and are represented by cultural custom (verb).

  • The clothing of a person defines and demarcates its body

  • The main motif of cloth was to protect their skin from harmful insects, to camouflage from anima and as privacy matters from other men.

  • Every symbol or pattern on the clothes shows all the non-material domains they wanted to display.

  • The clothes are based on weather conditions like thick clothes for winters.

  • Clothes also respond to the natural material found in the area and reflect their unique identity and aesthetics.

  • There are different types of tattoos and hairstyles people have which shows their culture and non-material domain behind it.

  • The material domain deals with physical objects that can be felt and are represented by a cultural object (noun).fand to protect us from damage.

  • Hierarchy, identity and status factors also affect clothing to protect their culture from being forgotten and demolished and to spread their customs and rites to their future generation. Some rituals are performed with painting symbols on the body, etc.

  • Skill and Paronage Factors that are unique to a people or community which only they are skilled with also affects different clothes

  • Culture and Identity were all the time affected by men, material, environment, skills, world-wide and communication factors.

Sense and Sensitivity

The internal process by which creative expressions result

Reflective Note

Through this project, I learned the new category of making art and design on the topic of feelings. At first, it was very difficult to even think of what to make but at last, I made it without thinking. I was getting confused to make these hemes without even trying and was thinking more. So, to get the results I just make myself flow with that feeling and make what that feel do to us when it takes action. This project also opened our brains to think beyond what is existing or actual and to make the perfect feel, not the elements and also the composition without actual things. This improved a lot of our visual skills and by looking to the arts by my peers give deeper explanations and the methods of depicting a feel through art.

Realization about Visual Language

The visual language explained the common ideology, believes, the pattern of thinking and style which was common for the particular art of that era. It tells us how the people took inspiration from previous art and inherited their skills to the next generations. It tells about their culture, its meaning, hidden context and the process of making. It also forces us to explore in a more zoomed view and makes us understand every minute detail and help us to research at the macro level which further gives more details for our study. The visual language talks about the elements (dots, lines, shapes, forms and colours) and principles ( balance, emphasis, movement, harmony, unity, integrity and rhythm) of the design that make the art.

Concluding Reflective Note to present my personal views on Art & Design

What is art?

It is the evidence of the history that shows the material culture and aesthetics of that place and time period.

Why do we create Art?

We create art to express emotions and represent our culture.

How do we create Art?

We create art by making it on a medium or by creating a formation using materials.

What is the purpose of Art?

To literate people and make them aware and communicate their thoughts.

What are the factors and agents (people & phenomenon) that contribute towards the "Meaning Making" of a creative visual expression?

The factors and agents are - Culture or Religion, Worldwide event, Economy, Political Leaders, Geography, Society/Community, Migration and Trading, and Illiteracy.

What is the relationship between Art & Design? What are the similarities & differences? Is there a difference in their purpose? Compare & contrast their process?

Relation - Both art and design are directly related to each other because if art is made then the design can also be made out of it. If no art no design would ever have existed.

Similarities - To make both art and design we require a basic drawing or a plan for making it.

Differences - Art is used to literate people whereas design was a plan that can be used or makes life easier and has other benefits. Art is made for depicting emotions whereas design is made for solving the problem.

Does an understanding of the history and evolution of Art help us as students of Design? How?

Every historical information is important for a designed to know that makes us learn the mistakes that our previous generation made so that we can consider every aspect and also learn their ideological patterns which they followed and be continued so that the design could be more ergonomically beneficial to the requirements of a particular community.

Struggles & Achievements

Team Working

Challenges of working in a team

  • Not everyone participates equally in a group there are many difficulties at every end and led to uneven division in the process.

  • The workload is according to the no. of people for every group but the absence of members affects the whole group.

  • Not everyone understands fully at the individual level while working in a group.

Advantages of working in a team

  • It creates a community or a bonding in the members and we get to know each other better.

  • It also helps in discussing topics and gets a different point of views

  • It helps in dividing the workload at minor levels into every participant.

Suggestions for your own self to improve the experience and efficiency of working in a group in future.

  • I will learn how to edit the video so that one person has not taken the burden every time.

  • I will not lose my confidence in leading the group presentations.

  • I will always first listen to every member's viewpoints and then give my views after them so that I can make the overall plan and then move forward. I will not make my own suggestions only.

  • I will try my best to make my members work accordingly and not make them stay behind because later it affects the group only.

Discoveries about your own process of working

I found that whenever I start the process of inquiry I keep on going searching for more and more information. I am very curious to gain knowledge and gets drowned in the ocean of information. Yes, I had to limit my research so that it does not get overwhelmed and affect my main task.
